RealTalk Facts – the study on money and equality

To gain an even better understanding of the current situation for women and men when it comes to the topics discussed at RealTalk, PostFinance commissioned the market and social research institute gfs-zürich to conduct a Switzerland-wide study.

The core topics

More than 1,500 participants aged between 16 and 65 from German-speaking and Western Switzerland were surveyed on the following core topics:

  • Partnership and family
  • Work, career and salary
  • Finances and retirement planning
  • Consumption and purchases

The study results

As expected, a number of presumptions about the individual results have been confirmed by the study. Other results show a slow change in the distribution of roles within our society.

In the free study, for example, you will find a more detailed presentation of the following findings:

67 percent of all respondents consider equal sharing of childcare to be the ideal, but this is the case for only a quarter of respondents.

Childcare is distributed equally in just one in four households

Although 67 percent of respondents consider equal sharing of childcare to be the ideal, only a quarter state that this is actually the case for them.

Only 11 percent of women state that they are the main breadwinner in the family. On the other hand, 71 percent of men state that they are the main breadwinner.

Only 11 percent of all mothers state that they earn the majority of the family income

While the father’s role as the main breadwinner is hardly surprising, 47 percent of the mothers surveyed stated they would like to increase their level of employment.

Men are more likely to finance large purchases in a partnership themselves. For example, 28 percent of all men surveyed stated that they finance the family car themselves. For women, the proportion financing cars is only 7 percent.
